Canadian telecoms carrier, Rogers, announced that it is launching Canada’s first 5G Network in significant cities in the country. The early stage of the rollout will see the introduction of the network in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, as well as Vancouver.
The company plans to expand its operational coverall to more than 20 additional markets before the end of the year. Rogers also said it’s the only company from Canada that’s a member of the Global 5G forum. The forum includes heavyweight companies like America Movil, KT, Tesla, Vodafone, and Verizon.
CEO and president of Roger, Joe Natale, stated that 5G remains the biggest revolution in technology since wireless technology was launched in Canada. The company is investing rightly, deploying the right technology, and building the right partnerships. It aims to offer the best of the 5G technology to Canadians.
He continued that 5G will do much more than just powering businesses. It can drive the digital world and fuel the entire industries in Canada. Over three decades ago, Roger set the pace when it was the first to introduce wireless technology into the country. Now, the company is setting another pace as the first to bring 5G network into the country.
Roger 5G network initially utilizes a 2.5 GHz spectrum in the cores of Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. However, the company intends to expand it to 600 MHz spectrum before the end of the year.
600 MHz is perfect for carrying wireless data over a long distance, which creates higher quality and more consistent coverage in both urban and rural cities. Natale stated that the company intends to link up the 4G spectrum, which would be used for 5G.
The endless capability of 5G technology
According to Natale, 5G technology will provide endless opportunities for businesses and global companies. Within the next several years, 5G technology could transform industries and businesses with increased capacity and speed, low latency, improved battery life, and more effective use of spectrum.
5G also offers massive support to a wide range of connected devices, which was not possible because of the limitations of 4G technology. It will provide an enormous leap in the application of virtual reality, robotics, patient health care, as well as smart communities.
Rogers in partnership with Ericsson
Rogers has been in collaboration with Ericsson since the launch of the first wireless network in 1985. Ericsson is the leading provider of 5G technology in North America. The partnership is meant to densify and boost Rogers with 4.5G and 5G technology and ensure that customers get the best service when the 5G technology rolls out this year.
Rogers has invested massively
Since the launch of its wireless network in 1985, Rogers has invested more than $30 billion in wireless technology. The network carrier has also spent about $9 billion for spectrum licenses. The massive investment has impacted on the Canadian market, as the country boasts the third fastest network in the world, twice as fast as in the U.S.
LTE is the most dominant network, as it covers 99% of Canadians. However, the Canadian government also had a role to play in this feat. The right regulatory framework was in place to make sure telecom carriers and other industries thrive in the changing technological landscape.
According to Natale, Rogers is not competing with other companies in Canada. Instead, the competition is more severe with other countries. That’s why the right public policy and the right investment need to be made, he concluded.
